Fans Welcome Grand Final Decision, Urge AFL to Keep Listening

AFL FANS ASSOCIATION (AFLFA): “GIVING FOOTY FANS A VOICE”

The AFL Fans Association has welcomed today’s announcement by Andrew Dillon and Craig Drummond confirming the AFL Grand Final will remain at its traditional 2:30pm start time for the next two years — a decision that reflects the clear and consistent voice of fans.

AFL Fans Association President Ron Issko said the outcome demonstrated the importance of listening to supporters.

“This decision shows that when fans speak clearly, the AFL listens — and that must continue across all major decisions,” Ron said.

“We thank Andrew, Craig and the AFL Commission for maintaining one of the great traditions of our game.”

“For generations, a 2:30pm Grand Final has brought people together — not just for the match itself, but for the shared experience around it. Families and friends can gather for a lunch or BBQ, enjoy the game, and still have time afterwards to celebrate or commiserate without it becoming too late for kids.”

“Grand Final day is about more than just the match — it’s a uniquely shared experience, and the traditional time slot plays a vital role in that.”

The AFL Fans Association said the decision is particularly important at a time when many supporters are facing cost-of-living pressures and are carefully considering their ability to attend games.

“Fans — particularly those who regularly attend — are increasingly concerned that some AFL decisions are being driven primarily by broadcast and commercial considerations,” Mr Issko said.

“This outcome shows there is a better balance when the voice of fans is genuinely heard.”

The AFL Fans Association believes the leadership of both Andrew Dillon and Craig Drummond provides an important opportunity to set a clear tone that fan perspectives will be a consistent and valued part of decision-making at the highest level of the game.

“With new leadership at Commission level, there is a real opportunity to ensure fans are recognised as a key stakeholder in every major decision — not just consulted occasionally, but consistently considered,” Ron said.

The AFL Fans Association is calling for a more formal and consistent approach to incorporating fan input into decisions that directly impact attendance, affordability and the match-day experience.

“We look forward to continuing constructive discussions with the AFL on key fan issues, including the affordability of attending matches and ensuring the game remains accessible to all,” Mr Issko said.

“The strength of the AFL has always been its fans — and the game is at its best when their voices are not just heard, but embedded in every major decision.”
