FANS TO WITNESS HISTORY AS SCOTT PENDLEBURY BREAKS AFL GAMES RECORD

AFL FANS ASSOCIATION (AFLFA): “GIVING FOOTY FANS A VOICE”

The AFL Fans Association congratulates Scott Pendlebury on becoming the VFL/AFL games record holder when he plays his 433rd match this weekend for Collingwood against West Coast at the MCG.

With around 90,000 fans expected, the occasion will mark one of the great moments in AFL history, driven by the passion of supporters across every era of Pendlebury’s career.

We asked fans for one word to describe Pendles — ‘class’, ‘GOAT’, ‘dependable’, ‘conductor’, ‘legend’, ‘longevity’, ‘leader’ and ‘greatness’ — capturing the respect and affection he commands.

AFL Fans Association committee member and 30-year Collingwood member Sheridan Verwey said the milestone reflects what fans value most in the game. “Fans honour their club through loyalty, commitment and sacrifice — and Pendlebury’s matched that with 20 years at the highest level,” Ms Verwey said.

“To play 433 AFL games at the elite level is extraordinary, with Pendlebury the model of professionalism, consistency and leadership.”

“Pendlebury debuted for Collingwood in 2006 — when Adam Goodes won the Brownlow Medal and before the iPhone — and has gone on to build one of the most respected careers in AFL history.”

“There are only a select few players who have reached 400 games, demonstrating how difficult sustained excellence is in elite sport.”

“Remarkably, Pendlebury has played in front of more than 23 million fans, making him the most watched player in the history of the game.”

“On behalf of fans everywhere, we congratulate Pendles on this historic achievement and thank him for the inspiration and memories.”

The AFL Fans Association also acknowledges the significance of the occasion for fans at the MCG to witness a moment that will become part of AFL history.
