AFL Fans Association welcomes announcement by former AFL player Mitch Brown

AFL FANS ASSOCIATION (AFLFA): “GIVING FOOTY FANS A VOICE”

The AFL Fans Association welcomes Mitch Brown’s decision to share details of his sexuality and supports his intent to help create an environment where the “safety, comfort and space” is present if others choose to do the same.

AFLFA Patron Jason Ball is a former amateur Aussie Rules footballer and passionate LGBTIQ and mental health advocate, said, “Mitch Brown’s decision to come out is an incredibly powerful moment not just for him, but for every gay or bi player in the game right now and any young person who loves footy and is struggling to accept who they are.”

“When I was a kid, I couldn’t imagine a gay or bi AFL player being embraced by teammates, clubs, and fans. That silence made me feel like I had to choose between being myself and playing the sport I loved.”

“Mitch’s courage changes that. His honesty will show kids that they can be themselves and still belong in football. That visibility will save lives and keep more young people in the sport. I’m proud of him and so grateful for what this means for the next generation.” Ball said.

Ron Issko, President of the AFL Fans Association remarked, “Mitch Brown’s announcement is a big step forward in making Australian Rules Football an inclusive environment where all fans, players and officials feel welcome.” AFL Fans Association membership is free and fans are encouraged to join at www.aflfans.org.au and follow us on social medi
