AFL Fans Association Supports a Totally Inclusive Environment

AFL FANS ASSOCIATION (AFLFA): “GIVING FOOTY FANS A VOICE”

The AFL Fans Association supports a totally inclusive environment where everyone can feel safe and welcomed.

We will not tolerate any form of homophobic, racist, sexist or gender-based derogatory language, such as that witnessed on social media towards an AFLW player these past two weeks.

Jason Ball, AFL Fans Association Patron and former amateur Aussie Rules footballer, has issued this statement:

"Homophobic language was the reason I stayed in the closet as a young footballer. It made me feel like I had to choose between being myself and playing the sport I love. AFL should be a game for everyone, but as long as homophobia, sexism, and racism are tolerated—whether on the field, in the stands, or online—more people will be pushed away.

I am incredibly proud that AFLW has become a safe space for so many openly queer women to feel comfortable and proud of who they are. That’s what makes this incident so deeply disappointing. The AFL must do more to create a zero-tolerance environment that is free from discrimination, hate, and bullying, one that embraces and celebrates all people, no matter who they are, where they come from, or who they love."

Debbie Hall - Disability, Diversity & Inclusion, Fans Liaison Manager, says, “We stand together united behind the AFLW competition and all the women who participate on the playing field, coaches and staff and those who come to watch. We will continue to call out any abhorrent, offensive behaviour towards women.”

AFLFA membership is free, and fans are encouraged to join at www.aflfans.org.au
