Che Cockatoo-Collins

Che Cockatoo-Collins is a former Australian Rules footballer who played in the Australian Football League (AFL). He debuted with the Essendon Football Club in 1994 and went on to play 85 games, kicking 109 goals. Known for his speed and agility, he was an accurate goal kicking forward. Che was an AFL Rising Star nominee in 1994 and a crowd favourite at Essendon, known for his flair and energy on the field.

After returning home to South Australia, Che played with the Port Adelaide Football Club from 1999 playing 75 games, kicking 111 goals, playing an important role in the early years of Port Adelaide’s AFL journey, until 2003, when he retired from the AFL.

Che was inducted into the AFL Queensland Hall of Fame in 2023.

Che is of Indigenous Australian descent, with family connections to the Ku Ku Yalanji, Yupangathi, Gangalidda and Gunggari peoples. His maternal great-great-grandfather was known as “Old Man Cockatoo,” which inspired his surname.

Part of a talented football family, his younger brothers David and Donald Cockatt-Collins, also played AFL footy. His nephew Nakia Cockatoo played for Geelong and the Brisbane Lions, continuing the family’s strong football legacy.

Since retiring from the AFL, Che has been involved in community work, Indigenous advocacy, using his platform to support Indigenous youth and promote cultural pride. He remains an influential figure in Indigenous Australian sports circles and is known for his efforts in reconciliation and mentoring.

Che is deeply committed to advancing Indigenous representation and inclusion. He currently works as the Executive Manager of Indigenous Affairs at NBN Co, where he leads initiatives to improve digital participation and literacy among Indigenous Australians. He is also the Patron of the AFL Fans Association, advocating for Indigenous voices within the AFL community.

Che demonstrates a strong commitment to both his community and his professional endeavours. His leadership in Indigenous Affairs and his advocacy for representation in sports, makes him a respected figure in both sectors.
