The AFL has well and truly lost the plot, the tackle is now deadThe AFL officially sunk to its lowest point on Tuesday night with the Tribunal changing the fabric of the contest in horror fashion. On Tuesday night the AFL Tribunal effectively drove in the final nail on the coffin.Charlie Cameron and Toby Bedford both fronted the Tribunal in attempts to have their three game bans overturned after both were cited for dangerous tackles. Both men failed and will now sit out for the upcoming three matches.In upholding the rulings handed out by the Match Review Officer, the fabric of the game that we know and love was changed forever.What do the fans think? Does football need more lawyers and rules to protect players in a contact sport? Our AFL Fans Association volunteer umpire has compiled the following facts about our AFL field umpires.1. AFL field umpires have officiated over 6000 games of AFL football. This does not include state and local league games to learn how to umpire one of the most difficult games in the world. 2. Each full round on the fixture uses 36 field umpires (excluding injuries) out of 42 contracted AFL umpires on the list (one umpire currently on maternity leave). 3. Of the 42 field umpires, 43% are from Victoria. Every state and territory have at least one representative except for the Nothern Territory.4. On average, each AFL match has 580 games of umpiring experience. 5. Eight AFL umpires have officiated in over 300 games of AFL football with Brett Rosebury leading the way with 508 games up until the end of the 2023 season.6. AFL umpires are awarded an AFL Umpires Association Heritage Number representing their debut in cumulative sequence of total umpires. For example, Ray Chamberlain umpired his first game in 2004 and is number 401. Jame Strybos umpired his first game in 2017 and is number 458.7. Umpires, like players have an assigned shirt number they wear consistently during the season.
